My Dream Summer | Colin Fearing
My submission for the Skills Alberta 2020 2D/3D animation contest.
(Update - It won Gold!)
The video is a mix of both 2D and 3D techniques (including - Chroma key, parallax, track mattes, keyframing, stop motion, 3D rendered objects, 3D physics simulation for sails, animation modifiers, alpha masking, opacity keyframing & lumetri colour adjustments.
All scenes, objects (except the boat) and backgrounds were handpainted & animated by me, as well as the character and effects. The only things I did not make are the Music (Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men) and a few small assets (fire, birds, butterflies) which came from Footagecrate.
I used Photoshop to paint my backgrounds, and Adobe After Effects to animate everything. Finally, I imported the finished clips into Premiere Pro for colour-correcting, transitions and sound effects.
I used Blender to render the boat, trees in 3D.
I used a homemade dolly (3d printed car on a sloped board with the camera attached) and a greenscreen I painted on the wall of my room to pull off the stop motion animation. (the last few scenes were video with frames removed to give it a stop motion effect)
I really wish I wasn't constrained by the 30-second limit (WAYYY TOO SHORT) so the pacing might be a little off - but overall I'm really happy with how it turned out!
For SEO - Gold medal winner in the 2020 Skills Alberta 2020 2D/3D animation category.
